1. Remove unwanted startup applications:
Click start -> run -> type "msconfig". And press enter.
It will open a System Configuration Utility. Click Startup tab.
This tab lists the files that are loaded at Startup.
De-select the programs that you don't need to load at Startup.
Click OK.

2. Right click in Desktop -> click properties (to open Display properties)
or
use control panel -> display-> Settings.
Select the color quality as "16 bit" instead of "32 bit".
It will reduce the Ram used for storing pixel values to half. It can be used for old systems with CRT monitor.
3. Defragment the harddisk once in a month.
use Auslogistics Defragmenter - Freeware. or Windows inbuilt defragmentation tool using C: -> right click -> properties ->Tools -> Defragment Now.
Files stored in Harddisk are not stored contiguously. i.e., A file may be stored in different locations of the harddisk as blocks. These are called fragments. Whenever such file is opened for reading or writing, the Harddisk header has to move frequently hence and forth for reading a single file.
De-fragmentation moves all the file fragments and writes them contiguously, so that harddisk header can read the files contiguously using single sequential head movement.
Note: Before defragmentation, clean or remove all temporary files using CCleaner freeware tool.

4. Clean the Windows Registry
use CCleaner - freeware for removing unwanted entries from registry automatically.
Registry is the data that stores settings of all windows OS, applications , etc. It will be loaded everytime with the Operating System. Whenever a new application or software is installed, it will add registry entries.
Since, even if we remove software, its registry entries are not removed fully. It will increase the Registry size, thus slows the system booting time.
Even though lot of tools are available in the net, i suggest use Auslogistics registry cleaner or CCleaner to clean registry.These are simple and effective tools.

5. Delete temporary files once in a month.
use CCleaner - freeware. Temporary files are stored in Harddisk, which may occupy unnecessary space, and can slow down your system. Delete both windows temp files and internet temporary files once in a week or month to increase system speed and browsing speed.
